About

Before covering

the Buckeyes

I’m a native of Dayton, Ohio, and began my sports journalism career in 1988. Yes, that was a long time ago. The Internet didn’t exist. I wrote stories on a six-line Tandy laptop that seemed like a technological marvel at the time. After 10 years at the York Daily Record in Pennsylvania, the last three covering the Baltimore Ravens, I was hired by the Columbus Dispatch in 1999 to cover the expansion Cleveland Browns. After chronicling that team’s misadventures for six long years, I covered the slightly less dysfunctional Cincinnati Bengals for three years.

On the

Buckeye Beat

I became an Ohio State beat writer for The Dispatch in 2011 and stayed until taking a buyout in 2025. I now cover the team on Substack. I have written three books about magical Ohio State seasons. The first was “Buckeye Rebirth” about the undefeated 2012 team. That was followed two years later by “The Chase,” the inside story of OSU’s 2014 national championship season. Last year, I wrote “Buckeye Brotherhood” about the ’24 title team. An audiobook version just became available. I also co-wrote Cardale Jones’ autobiography.

Education and Recognition

I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a history degree and from the Medill School of Journalism’s master’s program at Northwestern University.

I’ve won numerous state and national awards, including Best Sports Writer in the 2014 Ohio Associated Press Media Editors’ contest, the same honor in 2011 from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists, and Best Sportswriter in Ohio in 2023 from the National Sports Media Association.

BEYOND THE BYLINE

BEYOND THE BYLINE THE PERSON BEHIND THE STORIES

I am married to my wife, Erin. We are blessed with two grown children, a baby grandson we adore, and a dog we adore almost as much as our grandson.

I am self-taught at guitar and piano, but unfortunately, my teacher sucks. I am even worse at hockey but love it anyway.
